The overall objective of the ACTs project is to provide expertise and tools for combating the onset and spread of corruption in the private sector, with special focus on Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs). With its small size and lack of resources (e.g. well-staffed legal departments), the SME is particularly vulnerable to corruption risk, and unable to deploy effective strategies to defend itself.
The 25th January 2017 the NGO Transparency International published its annual Corruption Perception INDEX. The main outcome for 2016 is that over two-thirds of the 176 countries and territories in the index fall below the midpoint of the scale of 0 (highly corrupt) to 100 (very clean). The global average score is a paltry 43, indicating endemic corruption especially in a country's public sector.
